How can a Windows 7 / Windows 2008 system be joined in a UCS domain?

#Problem:

Domain joins of Windows 7 clients and Windows 2008 servers will only be supported in upcoming Samba releases (version 4) and currently (Samba 3.x) requires the setting of registry keys.

#Solution:

As of release 2.2-2, Univention Corporate Server contains a sufficiently current Samba version, to join Windows 7 / 2008 systems to a UCS domain.Certain registry keys need to be set on the Windows system. A corresponding registry excerpt is attached below.

With these adjustments the Windows 7 system will issue the following warning after the successfull the domain join:

Changing the Primary Domain DNS name of this computer to "" failed. The name will remain "name".

Microsoft issued a hotfix for this which can be downloaded under http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2171571/.
