Updating from PostgreSQL 8.3 to PostgreSQL 8.4

As of UCS 3.0, PostgreSQL 8.4 is also available in addition to PostgreSQL 8.3. When systems with PostgreSQL 8.3 are updated to UCS 3.0, however, the installed PostgreSQL version is retained.

The following steps are necessary on a UCS 3.x system for updating PostgreSQL 8.3 to PostgreSQL 8.4:

rm -rf /etc/postgresql/8.4/
apt-get install --reinstall postgresql-8.4
pg_dropcluster 8.4 main --stop
sed -i 's|#port =|port =|' /etc/postgresql/8.3/main/postgresql.conf
pg_upgradecluster 8.3 main
ucr commit /etc/postgresql/8.4/main/*
chown -R postgres:postgres /var/lib/postgresql/8.4
/etc/init.d/postgresql restart

Once the new database / data inventory has been verified, the PostgreSQL 8.3 data can be removed / the software package uninstalled:

pg_dropcluster 8.3 main --stop
dpkg -P postgresql-8.3
